The long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s Steady Confident Touch of a Man in His Prime, Athens band Boycycle’s new eight-song full-length Elbys Bolt (incorrectly referred to in last week’s Threats & Promises as a five-song EP) is a stylistically fluid collection that is equally indebted to Kate Bush’s otherworldly synth-pop, Talk Talk’s slow-burning studio-rock and Tune-Yards’ multicultural exploration. Meandering and melodic, with more highs than lows, the record wins on the strength of band leader Ashley Floyd’s unwavering vocals, which are front and center throughout. Nicholas Mallis & the Borealis share Saturday’s bill.
BOYCYCLE Local folk-pop band, featuring acoustics and synths and starring the vocals of Ashley Floyd. Album release show! See Calendar Pick on p. 14.
NICHOLAS MALLIS & THE BOREALIS Mallis' music is "a cross between David Bowie, The Ventures, and a little bit of Neil Diamond."
