Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mid-America Arts Alliance, “Spirited: Prohibition in America” presents photographs and artifacts from a tumultuous time in history, between the adoption of Prohibition in 1919 until its repeal through the 21st Amendment in 1933. The exhibition touches on complex cultural shifts as speakeasies flourished, organized crime rose and the roles of women changed through the Roaring Twenties. The opening event, held in partnership with the UGA Press and UGA Department of History, features cocktail demonstrations by mixologist Jerry Slater and songs of the era performed by food and beverage historian Elizabeth Pearce.
