Confederate Memorial

Many people who pass by the obelisk in the middle of Broad Street every day are not even aware that it’s a memorial to Athens’ Confederate dead. Now that you know, what are you gonna do about it? UGA history professor Akela Reason will provide information to help you form an opinion at a brown-bag luncheon sponsored by the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation. After the riot in Charlottesville, the ACHF realized that “we have a responsibility to shed light on the question of what these monuments mean, yesterday and today, and to help the community have a conversation about what the right thing to do is,” Executive Director Amy Kissane says.
