“Shades” by Amber Coleman in “To Be Black and Female”

Curated by Amber Coleman, a graduate candidate in art education, “To Be Black and Female” contemplates how black feminist theory can be applied to museum educational practices to elevate the visibility of African-American women’s art. Coleman, Ashley Crooks-Allen, Karina Lewis and Monique May created works using their experiences as a foundation. A collaborative exhibition between five MFA candidates, “Undermined” presents ceramic works by Yeonsoo Kim and Esther Mech that were manipulated using textiles by Amanda Britton, Erin Geagon and Johanna Norry. By taking utilitarian objects out of their traditional context, the artists encourage viewers to consider the many ways the medium can be used.
