Cody Jinks represents two strands of modern country music. On one hand, he’s a red-dirt singer-songwriter, keeping a proud Southwestern tradition alive. Just as importantly, he’s among the thirtysomethings raised during the final great mainstream runs to date for both rock and country. Many of these young artists chased their own rock dreams through DIY means. (Jinks’ country career follows a stint in a thrash-metal band.) Jinks’ self-sufficiency benefited his artistic redirection, propelling his independently released 2016 album I’m Not the Devil to the top five. This meteoric ascent didn’t bury his rock roots, based on his cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.”
