Featuring former members of We Versus the Shark, Man or Astro-man? and Chrissakes, rowdy local three-piece Mean Queen debuted last summer to deserved fanfare. The group’s menacing, melodic brand of post-punk is sludgy and angular, recalling bygone alt-rock acts Drive Like Jehu and Unwound. No official recordings are available just yet, but the band recently posted on Facebook that it has “recording and touring on the brain,” so keep your eyes and ears open. Mean Queen headlines a Caledonia show Friday that also includes Athenians Mother the Car, Hunger Anthem and The Honey Sliders.
MEAN QUEEN New local rock band featuring members of Chrissakes and We Versus the Shark. See Calendar Pick on p. 15.
MOTHER THE CAR Founded by a brother duo, this garage-rock act incorporates blues and other influences.
HUNGER ANTHEM Fuzzed-out, guitar-driven local indie-rock band.
THE HONEY SLIDERS Detroit-influenced rock band from Catropolis.
