The Octopus Project
Since releasing its debut, Identification Parade, in 2002, The Octopus Project has unleashed five additional full-lengths of beatific, electronic-tinted indie pop, with the latest being last year’s Memory Mirror. The Austin, TX group, known for its chaotic live show that occasionally features members swapping instruments mid-song, is at once retro and avant-garde, lo-fi and high-def. A couple of really good Athens bands share Friday’s Caledonia bill: Mean Queen, the jagged rock trio that recently dropped its debut EP, Take a Cool Pill, and Calico Vision, the recent Flagpole Athens Music Award winner whose sound is a stylish blend of Pavement sass and psych-pop mind-melt.
THE OCTOPUS PROJECT Long-running Austin, TX indie-pop band with a potent live show. See Calendar Pick on p. 10.
MEAN QUEEN Local rock three-piece with a fiery, discordant sound.
CALICO VISION Athens-based melodic psychedelic-pop group.
BOTANY Experimental instrumental outfit from Austin, TX.
