Futurebirds first soared in 2008 as a continuation of Athens’ long history of Southern psychedelia and the local forerunners of the Americana boom. They’re part distortion-bathed indie-rock outfit, part country band with bluegrass accompaniment and completely amazing once those four-part harmonies take center stage. Studio recordings, from the recent original song “Olive Garden Daydream #47” back to the group’s 2009 self-titled EP, are gold mines for fans of psych-rock, country-rock and jam bands. To fully appreciate Futurebirds’ sustained appeal, one must soak in their fine-tuned live show. What better time to check out the band that’s kept Southern music weird in the Classic City than the group’s 10th birthday bash?
