Micaela Hobbs
Created by local sculptor and potter Micaela Hobbs, “WE: American Thanksgiving Conflict and Communion” resembles a dinner table covered in place settings and serving pieces that are decorated with images of historical figures and institutions. After consulting Barbara McCaskill, co-director of the Civil Rights Digital Library, Hobbs collaborated with grad student Jennifer Niswonger to develop painted portraits of figures for which there was no likeness available. The installation invites viewers to imagine how conversations among these figures would have played out, and to contemplate how dinner tables serve as arenas for family and friends to debate and hopefully reach consensus about current issues.
