Amy Ray is a folk-rock icon due to her work with the Grammy-winning Atlanta duo Indigo Girls, who captured the hearts and minds of a generation of crunchy college kids in the late 1980s and early ’90s. While the Girls are still active, Ray largely focuses on her fertile solo career, where she explores the worlds of punk, Americana and old-time music. Her latest LP, Holler, released in September, features contributions from Vince Gill, Derek Trucks, Brandi Carlile and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and is a cool, confident set of country twangers with a dash of smoky soul. Ray, who lives in the North Georgia mountains, hits The Foundry with her band—dubbed, um, Her Band—and support from Nashville upstart Chastity Brown.
AMY RAY & HER BAND The Indigo Girl and her group perform a set of melodic country material. See Calendar Pick on p. 20.
CHASTITY BROWN Up-and-coming artist blending roots music and soul.
