A portrait of Nicholas II. Artist unknown.
“The Reluctant Autocrat: Tsar Nicholas II” explores the reigns the last two Romanov rulers, Alexander III and his son Nicholas II, whose forced abdication saw the fall of the Russian Empire. The exhibition features imperial-era porcelain, original photographic prints and icons that date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Several delicate textile objects are included, such as an officer’s parade uniform made for Nicholas II, a gold-embroidered children’s costume and a hand-painted silk military standard. Curated by Asen Kirin, Parker Curator of Russian Art and professor of art history, the exhibition is on view through Mar. 17. The museum is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday.
