Laura Gibson writes music that is both devastating and unassuming, songs that invite you in only to tear you apart. On Goners, the Oregon singer-songwriter’s fifth album—released in October via Barsuk—Gibson ruminates artfully on family, legacy, grief and power, delivering 10 of her best tunes to date. Gibson wrote and recorded Goners after receiving a master’s degree in creative fiction from New York’s Hunter College, and the achievement is reflected in songs like “Tenderness,” with its stunning opening lines: “I met you the year I stopped fearing my body/ The sky split open above me/ It was a pleasure to meet your pain.” Gibson and her backing band play a must-see gig at Hendershot’s Monday.
