Chinese Acrobats of Hebei

Jan. 25–26 @ UGA Fine Arts Theatre

Trained from early childhood, the Chinese Acrobats of Hebei are masters of gymnastics, contortion and martial arts who demonstrate what the human body is capable of through elaborate productions showcasing athleticism and grace. Many of their acts are rooted in performances documented from ancient times, when farmers would utilize everyday items into props for entertainment, like chair stacking, pole climbing and plate spinning. The popular Lion Dance, based on a folk dance, brings the big cat’s agility and strength to life through elaborate costumes and choreography, while a round of diablo accompanied with orchestral music demonstrates the traditional Chinese sport.
