Directed by Vicki Kodama, Five Artists is a 30-minute film sampled from the 1971 documentary African American Artists and Inventors. Focusing on each subject’s creative processes, background inspirations and perspectives on the African-American experience, the film drops into the lives of collage artist Romare Bearden, Harlem’s Studio Museum founder Betty Blayton, sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud, sculptor Richard Hunt and painter Charles White. Five Artists will be screened in conjunction with the exhibition “Richard Hunt: Synthesis,” which closes Feb. 3. One of the most influential artists in the world of American public art, Hunt has created over 130 commissions across 24 states during his six-decade career.
