Right in time for the Drive-By Truckers’ annual HeAthens Homecoming weekend at the 40 Watt Club, author Rien Fertel is visiting town to promote his most recent book, Drive-By Truckers’ Southern Rock Opera. Number 133 in Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series, the story takes readers on a road trip “From the Swamps of Northern Florida” (Jacksonville), down “A Mean Old Highway” (U.S. Route 72) and to “Hell” (Birmingham, AL). The New Orleans-based writer, whose previous works include Imagining the Creole City and The One True Barbecue: Fire, Smoke, and the Pitmasters Who Cook the Whole Hog, is a columnist at the quarterly magazine 64 Parishes and reviews books for The A.V. Club.
