French-born, Florida-based group Pearl and the Oysters weave together the sounds and vibes of their native home and their new one, with peppy, preppy electronics sharing sunlit space with surf-stoned melodies. The band’s latest album, Canned Music, out late last year via Burger Records, serves up 14 tasty morsels of lo-fi pop goodness. The outer-space-themed record finds the group exploring “our conception of Florida as a foreign, unexplored planet,” according to member Joachim Polack. The Oysters play Athens on Monday evening with local support from doo-wop cuties Baby Tony and the Teenies, psych-pop standout Locate S,1 and beat-driven experimenter Midnight Boi.
PEARL & THE OYSTERS Electropop group from Gainesville, FL with DIY production and sunny melodies. See Calendar Pick on p. 16.
LOCATE S,1 Local experimental pop group led by songwriter Christina Schneider.
BABY TONY & THE TEENIES Local band plays doo-wop-inspired pop songs about wasting time and having crushes.
MIDNIGHT BOI Alias of local musician Eli Rickli, playing "pseudo-Satanic hip hop."
