An R.E.M.-themed night combining literature and live music, Shiny Happy People is a creative fundraiser to support Artist2Artist’s initiative to address the needs of veterans experiencing PTSD or suicidal ideation by providing emotional support animals from the Athens Area Humane Society. The event kicks off with a book signing and chance to meet Robert Dean Lurie, author of Begin the Begin: R.E.M.’s Early Years. The Tempe, AZ-based writer and musician will offer a reading in between two sets by New York-based R.E.M. tribute band Dead Letter Office. Prizes will be awarded to the three most imaginative guests who dress up in their best interpretation of the song “Shiny Happy People.”
Celebrate the release of author Robert Dean Lurie's new book, Begin the Begin: R.E.M's Early Years, and hear music by R.E.M. tribute artists Dead Letter Office. Proceeds support Artist2Artist's program addressing veterans and suicide prevention. See Calendar Pick on p. 16.
