Friday evening at Avid, self-taught local artist Ruth Allen celebrates the release of her debut picture book, Pink Cake, which combines imaginative rhymes with her signature watercolor illustrations. The story follows Eliza Jane Trotsky, who wakes up on her birthday to find a piece of pink cake. After going outside with the intention of enjoying her cake, along rolls a jalopy full of treasures and the opportunity to make a trade. Allen, whose comic “Victimology” formerly ran in Flagpole, draws and paints as a means of emotional expression. Tickets to Friday’s event include a copy of the book and a slice of pink cake, but guests are still welcome to attend without a ticket.
