Started in the mid-aughts to celebrate a particularly fertile and energetic time in the local music scene, Athens Face/Off organized dozens of players into small groups and challenged them to create a batch of new songs over the course of just a few weeks. After a hiatus, the event returned in 2016 and has popped up at the 40 Watt each year since. The 2019 Face/Off features randomly assigned trios from a whopping list of 60 musicians, including members of Family and Friends, Partials, Georgia Dish Boys, Blunt Bangs, Athens Cowboy Choir, Black Kids, Caulfield, New Madrid, Athens Tango Project and a bunch of other bands. Expect an inspiring spectacle.
ATHENS FACE/OFF A social and sonic experiment, Athens Face/Off is a project in which local musicians are randomly assigned into trios and spend one month preparing an original set of material with their new bandmates. See Calendar Pick on p. 19.
