With mega-hits like “Oye Como Va,” multi-instrumentalist and composer Tito Puente helped popularize Latin music in the United States throughout the latter half of the 20th Century. Now, his son, percussionist and bandleader Tito Jr., carries on the elder Puente’s legacy with impassioned takes on his father’s music, as well as his own originals, which combine traditional and contemporary flavors. On Saturday, local promotions group Athens Latin brings Puente Jr. to town for a show at The Foundry, where the New York-based musician will be backed by a seven-piece band for a high-energy set featuring plenty of salsa, mambo, merengue and other classic styles.
TITO PUENTE JR. The son of the legendary bandleader performs jazz, Latin, salsa, merengue, mambo and other Latin sounds. See Calendar Pick on p. 19.
