One of the most prominent groups on the Kindercore Records roster in the mid-1990s, Masters of the Hemisphere centered on the songwriting of lifelong friends Bren Mead and Sean Rawls, the latter of whom would also lend his talents to local goof-rawk troupe Je Suis France. Over the course of four full-lengths, including the 2002 highlight Protest a Dark Anniversary, the group connected the dots between Athens’ musical past and present, filtering melody-drunk jangle-pop through a sun-dappled, lightly psychedelic lens. After eight years, the Masters returned in 2011 with Maybe These Are the Breaks, a smart and streamlined comeback LP. Now, eight years later, the band reconvenes for an extended set at an old haunt.
