An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for downtown’s newest mural, “Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy,” will feature guest speakers, live music and local vendors. Supported by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission with matching funds from an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the mural was created by Miami-based painter Elio Mercado with the assistance of local artist Broderick Flanigan over the span of three weeks. Paying homage to the area’s legacy as a hub for African-American entrepreneurship, the mural depicts Monroe Bowers Morton of the Morton Theatre and Homer Wilson of Wilson’s Styling Shop, among imagery celebrating a rich musical heritage.
