In a time where social media permeates most facets of everyday life and many news stories break thanks to citizen journalism, this panel discussion seeks to address the ethics of taking pictures of people in public spaces without their consent. Topics explore the rights of subjects to refuse, the relationship between an individual and an image, power imbalances between photographer and subject and the impact a photo can add to cultural heritage. Moderated by Pat Priest of WUGA, the panelists include poet and social worker Michelle Castleberry, photographers David Noah and Jason Thrasher, retired UGA law professor Lee Reed and Mark Johnson, head of photojournalism at Grady College.
