Since its mid-1970s formation, English band Steel Pulse has been among the most politically outspoken roots-reggae acts, a trait that aligned it early on with the UK punk scene and helped build musical bridges that would influence a generation. Over the course of 11 studio albums from 1978–2004, the group tackled racism, globalization, gun violence and climate destruction while remaining grounded in Rastafarian ideals. In May, the band released its first full-length in 15 years, Mass Manipulation, which touches meaningfully on police brutality and other hot-button issues while incorporating elements of funk and hip hop. Local band Underground Springhouse opens Monday’s show.
