A blogosphere fave who helped usher in a DIY electropop renaissance in the mid 2000s, Maryland musician Dan Deacon’s early signature was blending breakneck beats with a heaping helping of pathos. Like fellow Baltimore band Animal Collective, Deacon found humanity in alien sounds on albums like 2007’s Spiderman of the Rings. He has since enjoyed a second wind as a go-to scorer of film and television and has made a name for himself in the unlikely fields of ballet and contemporary classical, working with Kronos Quartet, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and other highbrow acts. Deacon will return to his synthpop roots on an upcoming album, Mystic Familiar, out Jan. 31 via Domino.
