Flagpole's 2014 Athens Workout Mixtape

Fitness & Health Issue

Motherfucker

Exercise is good for you. It's a fact. Most established guidelines for adults recommend at least half an hour of physical activity per day, which, for those of us both predisposed to idleness and armed with a functioning Netflix account, can be a chore, especially without a good soundtrack to get you through it.

So, in an effort to get with this whole "fitness" thing, here is a 37-minute mixtape of some of our favorite local songs of 2014. Along with the titles, we've included the recordings from which they are taken, in case you wanna track 'em down, and the tunes' running times. Each song is also paired with an appropriate accompanying exercise (though you may of course substitute your own). Suggested activities are rated on a three-tiered scale: low, moderate and vigorous.

SIDE A

1. Deep State: "Tittyboyz" (Bein' Mean EP, 3:47)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Have a nice, deep belly-laugh about the fact that the catchiest song to come out of Athens this year is called "Tittyboyz."

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Low.

2. Katër Mass: "Brain Dead" (Circles, 2:13)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Knock on the door to Gordon Lamb's apartment. Place bag on stoop. Light bag on fire. Run away.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Vigorous. Dude is deceptively fast.

3. Tunabunny: "Coming For You" (Kingdom Technology, 1:59)

Tunabunny

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Cross arms, nod along. Look furtively around to make sure everyone else is doing the same.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Low.

4. Hot Fudge: "To Be One Ask One" (#1 Tape, 2:56)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Air-geetar. Lots of it.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Depends on your level of commitment. Moderate for most.

5. Circulatory System: "Stars and Molecules" (Mosaics Within Mosaics, 3:06)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Pick up remote. Flip over to Every Simpsons Ever marathon. Watch on mute.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Like being low. Hey, hey, hey. Like being stoned.

6. Lowdive: "So Glad" (Rude Girl, 3:07)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Skank the night away.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Vigorous, but please stop. You're disturbing the other customers, and also, it's not 1998.

SIDE B

1. Five Eight: "The Hollow" (unreleased album, 3:42)

Hear here.

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Start a band. Play a few shows. Release some records. Repeat for a quarter-century.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Vigorous.

2. Mob Knarly & Flashbomb: "Mosh Pit (Flosstradamus remix)" (single, 3:12)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Wait, what time is it? No shit. Is that the sun?

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Vigorous, but that increased heart rate's not just from the cardio.

3. Muuy Biien: "She Bursts (Reprise)" (D.Y.I., 3:23)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Go to a Muuy Biien show. Stare down singer Josh Evans the whole time. Receive his black-eyed gaze in return. Try not to pee your pants.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Moderate.

4. Motherfucker: "Dot. Dot. Dot." (Tae Kwon Do EP, 2:49)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Run as fast as you can until you can't run anymore. Stumble, become suddenly dizzy. Vomit. Oh God, are you dying? Run some more.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Don't do this.

5. The Powder Room: "Blowout" (Curtains, 2:57)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Sneer violently and repeatedly into a full-length mirror, never breaking eye contact.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Low.

6. Old Smokey: "You're Always Gonna Be Able to Get One More" (Wester Easter, 4:08)

PAIR WITH EXERCISE: Wander aimlessly through a forest at twilight. Once the sun sets, accept that you're lost. Try to sleep under a pile of leaves. Cold air burns calories, is a thing you think you learned once.

DEGREE OF INTENSITY: Moderate, but highly unpleasant.
