Mad Planet: Ghost Notes

Flowing synth grooves

Los Angeles' Mad Planet gives a stellar performance on its new album Ghost Notes. Classified as alternative music, the band leans more towards post-punk and emerges sounding like an updated version of Mazzy Star.

The album is composed mostly of flowing synth chords laced with percussive cymbal crashes, deep bass grooves, and, of course, Cooper Gillespie’s swimming vocals. “Pieces of You” is the perfect start, with a reserved intro that builds brilliantly to offbeat drums and high-energy guitar riffs. There’s also a showcase of Gillespie’s haunting vocals that showcases her range.

The most interesting aspect of Ghost Notes is the extensive incorporation of all the bandmembers. The music is just as important as the vocals, which improves the overall performance and allows the listener to jam out to the funk of the bass guitar and get in some good foot-tapping along with the drums.
