Oneida's 15-year run has seen the psych/noise/kraut-rock trio (sometime quintet) release some of the brightest and boldest sounds around. Whether perpetuating the honed brilliance of a single riff on tracks like “Sheets of Easter” or finding pastoral beauty in dissonance on tracks like “The Eiger,” the band has never hesitated to follow or indulge an impulse.

A List of the Burning Mountains picks up where Absolutes II, the final part in Oneida’s Thank Your Parents triptych, left off. While Absolutes II was a fitting comedown from two of the band’s arguably best albums (the high-kraut meanderings of Preteen Weaponry and the robust kaleidoscope of Rated O), List ventures deeper into amorphous sonic territory.

Menacing and dark, subtle waves of noise ebb and flow across these two 20-minute tracks. Much like percussion extraordinaire Kid Millions’ other projects People of the North and Man Forever, these two songs capture primal darkness with expressionistic improvisation, probably the closest the band will ever get to capturing one of its hallowed 12-hour live marathons on record.
