Franco Funicello’s claim to fame thus far is breaking the world record for "the number of shows played in 48 states in 48 days"—by playing 58 shows. The local band is one step closer to the spotlight with its newest release, Call For a Good Time. The 12-track album, which was recorded at Gypsy Farm Studios in Lavonia and released this August, features elements of old-school pop-rock from the '80s and '90s.

But Call For a Good Time features a variety of sounds and styles, such as the upbeat pop of “Say it to You” and the Nirvana-esque chord progression in “Strange Ways.” The band even makes an effort at a cappella on the short track “Enuff.” For the most part, Franco Funicello executes strongly. The record could have benefited from a stronger opener; "Is it Safe" doesn't quite set the tone for the rest of the album. 

Call For a Good Time showcases the band’s influences and is a nice walk down memory lane for listeners who remember when bands like Nirvana—or even Modest Mouse—were present on the airwaves. The album gets off to a slightly slow start, but quickly turns into an enjoyable experience for fans of indie rock and old school pop-rock. 3 out of 5.
