(Independent Release) Singer and guitarist Caleb Keith is a Midwest native who has positioned himself at the center of Athens’ roots-music scene. Keith’s new album with the Calaveras, Between Late and Lonesome, showcases his capable songwriting, enhanced by his skillful backing group’s workmanlike precision.

Keith’s voice bears a slight resemblance to Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy circa Being There, and though his lyricism doesn’t merit the same comparison, the record’s sense of familiarity should appeal to fans of the iconic Americana outfit. Lead track “Marie” is a wistful, wandering alt-country ditty that could kick off your next road-trip playlist. “Middle America” deftly explores themes of loneliness, displacement and the false promise of wide-open spaces.

Between Late and Lonesome gets same-y by the end of its 32-minute runtime—although rocking closer “No Grace” is a highlight—but there’s a pleasantness about the album, a summery warmth that makes it easy to enjoy.
