DJ Segar
KEEP IT SMOOTH: Dwain Segar, aka DJ Segar, the man behind the Segar Jazz Affair radio show and live sessions, just finished a run of 35 of his smooth jazz concerts at The Foundry, but his next one is special. For his 36th show, he’ll be celebrating his 60th birthday. This happens Sunday, Oct. 8 and will feature John Dunn & The Jazzman Band. Advance tickets for the show are $12, but if you’d like to feast on the buffet dinner beforehand, it’ll run ya $27. The dinner begins at 5 p.m., and the show begins at 6. For tickets, see thefoundryathens.com, and for more information on DJ Segar, see facebook.com/segarjazzaffair.
GO CELEBRATE: The third annual Chillith Fair happens at Go Bar Oct. 13 and 14. This year’s beneficiaries are Athens PRIDE, Atlanta’s Lost-n-Found Youth and the Athens Yoga Project. Featured performers include Nihilist Cheerleader, Hannie and the Slobs, Immaterial Possessions, Shade, O Key, Shania the Artist, Pamela and Her Sons, Calico Vision and Blue Bodies. Chillith Fair is dedicated to its role as “a celebration of women, gender non-conforming, trans and queer identities,” and, as such, chooses beneficiaries and performers that reflect this role and these values. For information on this year’s beneficiaries, see athenspride.org and facebook.com/LostNFoundYouth. There’s no online presence for the Athens Yoga Project, so if you’ve got any questions, just ask ’em at the shows.
A BRAND NEW THING: Big Morgan will release its debut album Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Caledonia Lounge. Although it has maintained a fairly regular presence on the Athens and Atlanta scene for at least the past two years, the band hasn’t committed a whole lot to tape. The new record is named Superpunch, and it’s no real secret that Big Morgan has changed a bit since its debut EP back in 2015. The band is now a much more straightforward rock force, and its live show has benefited greatly. I’ve not had the opportunity to grab a copy of this new record yet, but I expect good things. Also on Thursday’s bill are Future Ape Tapes and Wieuca. Head to facebook.com/bigmorgantheband for more information.
FIVE FOR FIGHTING: Attentive listeners already know that the lead single from Kwazymoto’s upcoming release Limerence Land is named “Defamed Fatale” and has been around since August. The full five-song EP release comes out Oct. 13, and Kwazymoto will play a release show a week later. That in-between time is going to prove useful for listeners, because for as good as Kwazymoto has been in the past, these five songs take it to another place. It’s lyrically complex without being needlessly wordy, musically complex without being wanky and full of machismo, and supremely hooky without falling into cliché territory. It is, in short, great. I hesitate to describe Kwazymoto as “improved,” because the band has been pretty compelling outta the gate. But with each release it expands its vocabulary and, thus, the boundaries of its particular language. This time, the group has hit a very sweet spot at the intersection of punk, hardcore, math rock, noise rock and melodic indie rock. Don’t throw this record on looking for clear evidence of any of those genres, though, as they’re merely influences. Kwazymoto continues to sound like itself more than anything else. Dig this when it comes out at kwazymoto.bandcamp.com, but use the time before then to explore past releases. News and information at facebook.com/kwazymot0.
EAT TO THE BEAT: Local hip-hop zine Volumes will present Queens of Hip Hop at Iron Factory Friday, Oct. 6. Featured performers are Valley Girl D, Seline Haze, Queen.Wavey, B.O.Y. and Ke Turner. The evening starts at 10 p.m., but if you’re interested in some good hang time and social networking, show up a little early to wave and say hey and all those things that let people know you’re a sociable person. For more information on the artists and Volumes in general, see facebook.com/volumeshiphop.
