An Athens-Clarke County police officer shot and killed a "peeping Tom" suspect Saturday on Hull Road.

Police responded to a call about the peeping Tom at about 11:40 p.m. The victim identified a suspect, and officers went to his residence on the 1200 block of Hull Road.

The suspect brandished a shotgun, and one of the officers, fearing for his life, shot the suspect, according to an ACCPD news release. They rendered first aid until an ambulance arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the man as Carlton Steve Brooks, a 63-year-old white male.

When officers knocked on Brooks’ door and announced themselves, they saw someone inside with a gun. They backed away and told him to put the gun down. Then Brooks opened the door and pointed the shotgun at one of the officers, who fired twice, according to the GBI.

The officer, who was not named, has been placed on administrative leave while the GBI conducts an investigation, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

It was the second time this year that ACCPD officers shot and killed someone. Last month, several officers opened fire on a man who pointed what appeared to be a handgun, but turned out to be a realistic-looking Airsoft gun, at them during a standoff in a Westlake Drive parking lot.
