Downed Trees, Power Outages After Storm

photo-11.jpg

Winds as high as 50 miles per hour ripped through Athens this morning, knocking down trees and power lines, blocking traffic and killing at least one person.

Trees are down all over the city, including several at Athens Regional Medical Center and one blocking Prince Avenue near the Finley Street intersection. There are also reports of trees down elsewhere in Normaltown, on campus, in Five Points, on the Loop and in Oconee County. One man was killed when a tree fell on his car at the Pinewood Estates mobile home park in northeast Athens. More than 4,000 Georgia Power customers in Athens are experiencing outages. Some traffic lights aren't working, so use caution.

Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works employees are understandably tied up this morning, but we'll update when we get in touch with them.
