The Clarke County School District has hired a new principal for Cedar Shoals High School, and a new assistant manager starts work with Athens-Clarke County next month.

The Clarke County Board of Education approved DeAnne Varitek as CSHS principal Thursday night, effective at the start of the 2016–17 school year.

Varitek is currently an assistant principal at Central Gwinnett High School, a job she’s held since 2013. Prior to that, she has been an instructional coach, high-school English teacher, technology coordinator and alternative school teacher.

She has a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree from Central Missouri State and a specialist degree from the University of Missouri, and has completed postgraduate work at UGA.

Interim principal Derrick Maxwell—tapped to replace the suspended Tony Price after a sexual assault coverup at CSHS—will return to Whit Davis Elementary.

ACC’s new assistant manager, Jestin Johnson, has managed the city of Bisbee, AZ since 2014. Previously, he served as deputy administrator of McDonough, operations coordinator for CH2M Hill OMI, the private company that manages Milton, and policy analyst in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget.

The Georgia State and Valdosta State graduate is an Air Force veteran, volunteered for Trees Atlanta and has served on the Bisbee Boys & Girls Club board and the DeKalb County Community Services Board.

Johnson starts work with Athens-Clarke County on July 11. He’ll replace Blaine Williams, whom Mayor Nancy Denson promoted to manager in April.
