This Ice Storm Looks Really Bad

DayAfterTomorrow1.jpg

The worst of the two winter storms coming through Georgia today and tomorrow is expected to hit north and east of metro Atlanta—including Athens, according to the National Weather Service.

Athens and points north can expect up to 2 inches of snow tonight and an additional 2–6 inches on Wednesday, along with a quarter- or half-inch of ice.

Snow and sleet will transition into rain this afternoon, then back to a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain tonight, then mainly freezing rain Wednesday morning and snow Wednesday night.

"This has all the makings of a major ice storm for North and Central Georgia," says athensgaweather.com.

Hazardous road conditions and widespread power outages are expected as ice freezes on roads and weighs down power lines.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. There's a 30 percent chance of rain or snow Thursday, but the high is predicted to reach 48 degrees. Now the NWS is saying 36 degrees. Things might not thaw out until Friday, when it's supposed to hit 51.
