Arch Elevation

I'm the preservation planner for the UGA Grounds Department. There are two factual errors early in Ms. Toledo's story about the Arch ["No Wheelchairs at the Arch, Please," May 9]: 1) it does not predate the Broad Street elevation of the North Campus fence and wasn't constructed until circa 1875, and 2) its original location was at current sidewalk level. (It wasn't raised to the top of a staircase until the grade was backfilled, probably for the combination of the 1870s library and Ivy buildings to create Holmes-Hunter.) I have a copy of a wonderful picture of the Arch in its original location circa 1900.

These are busy-body observations which really don't have any bearing on her (very important) article, but historic errors kinda bother me.

Thank you for listening,

Janine L. Duncan
