UGA Is Out of Reach for the Disabled

The university appears to be more concerned about the placement visibility of “sexuality safe zone” stickers than being ADA compliant [“UGA Is Inhospitable to the Disabled,” July 18]. Typical light switch heights in Boyd Hall are more than 5 feet from the floor, but I don’t see anyone protesting about that. In a world where vending machine choices are chance guesses for the blind, real accessibility matters. Individuals should not have to turn their wheelchairs sideways and pull up on their backpacks to turn on lights, but making it through doors is more than half the battle.

Editor's note: This letter originally implied that the author of the July 18 letter, Willem Styles, is in a wheelchair. Styles does not use a wheelchair, but was temporarily restricted from walking because of a fractured spine.
