I Saw a Ghost

I saw a ghost

You probably don’t believe me

I get it
After all,
Who believes in that sort of thing?

But I did

Early in the morning, this was
while no one else was awake
I couldn’t sleep
so I was sitting on the couch
just staring at the wall

She walked by
headed for the kitchen
I don’t know where she came from
All of a sudden
she was just there

I didn’t move;
couldn’t have even if I’d tried

She didn’t look at me
just walked (floated) across the hardwood
I could see the wall through her;
even down to the bad spot
where I bumped it with a chair leg moving in

Then,
she was gone

I sat for quite some time,
my gaze burning a hole in the wall
I wanted to turn my head;
to look and see if I could still see some sign of her
but I didn’t quite dare

At some point
I got up and went back to bed
I don’t remember doing it
but when the sun began to filter through the blinds
there I was

I didn’t sleep
Not that night
and not since;
at least not well
But now,
when insomnia haunts me
I don’t get up
I just lie quietly
until morning comes

I haven’t seen her since
but I don’t mind
Sometimes,
once is enough
