  • ACC Officials Outline Options for Prince Avenue

    Blog: In the Loop

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission decided on Tuesday to wait until the state Department of Transportation conducts a safety audit of Prince Avenue in September before making any changes to the street to improve pedestrian safety.

The state audit will cover the state-owned portion of Prince from Milledge Avenue to the bypass and will include recommendations on ways to make the corridor safer for cyclists and pedestrians, such as improved crosswalks and pedestrian refuges.

Local officials will participate in the study, ACC Transportation and Public Works Director David Clark told commissioners at a work session Tuesday. At the same time, Mayor Nancy Denson and commissioners told Clark to prepare short- and long-term recommendations for the local stretch of Prince between Milledge and Pulaski Street. They will consider both at the same time after GDOT submits a report in October or November.

  • 'Party Down South' Is the Worst Thing Ever

    Blog: Culture Briefs

    Party-Down-South-1389222182.jpg

For the past few months, Flagpole Music Editor Gabe Vodicka and I have been having a really good time blogging about and making fun of "Party Down South," the CMT reality show about eight self-described rednecks slowly killing themselves with alcohol, Leaving Las Vegas style.

We sent writer Rashaun Ellis to find out what indignities the cast had inflicted upon themselves and our fair city while filming season 2 in Athens, which Rashaun (jokingly, I thought) treated as some kind of punishment. Gabe and I thought we'd recap each episode, starting with the first one on Thursday. "It'll be fun!" we told ourselves. No. Because "Party Down South" is the single most depressing and cynical thing I've ever seen in my whole life, and this will probably be the last thing we ever write about it. Seriously. It's that bad. Don't watch it. Not even ironically.

  • Ex-Bulldog Tray Matthews Says Talking in Class (Not Theft) Led to Dismissal

Tray Matthews may have tried to steal hundreds of dollars from the University of Georgia, but that's not why he was kicked off the team. According to Matthews, it was because he talked too loud in class.

Athens Regional Medical Center Chief Information Officer Gretchen Tegethoff resigned today in the wake of a scandal over the implementation of a new electronic medical records system.

Tegethoff's departure follows that of CEO Jamey Thaw, who resigned last Thursday, two days after more than 200 doctors affiliated with the hospital met and held a no-confidence vote on Thaw's leadership.

Even though Georgia's new gun laws don't explicitly allow firearms on college campuses, you might be able to carry heat at UGA as of July 1 anyway.

A debate is brewing over the (unintentional?) consequences of two laws the state legislature passed and Gov. Nathan Deal signed this spring.

The Lawnmower Man could be breaking into your shed as we speak.

It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your lawn mower is?

Sometime last week, a motor, some push mowers, bed frames and a toolbox turned up missing from a garage on Harve Mathis Road.

Over the weekend, a weed eater, riding mower, push mower, edger, padlock and trailer were reported stolen from Dekle Road.

Athens-Clarke County police say there's been a rash of lawn-care equipment thefts in the area and put out an alert Tuesday offering tips on how to keep your John Deere out of the hands of criminals.

Mayor Nancy Denson campaigns outside Hill Chapel Baptist Church Saturday, May 10.

Athens voters head to the polls today to elect a nonpartisan mayor and three commissioners, as well as vote in Republican or Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate, Congress and statewide offices.

Before you vote, check out our guide to the local election. The Georgia Secretary of State's site can tell you whether you're registered and what districts you're in, and the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections has sample ballots, a list of polling places and other information. Which Denson will survive Highlander: The Densoning?

I infamously wrote a couple of months ago that Tim had no chance to beat Nancy. I still think it's unlikely, but with election officials expecting just 21–22 percent turnout, Tim has a puncher's chance. Here's what it would take for him to win.

Early voting is over and Election Day is tomorrow. Here's what's happening in the waning days and hours of the campaign.

    • Early voting numbers were just sad: 3,186 in-office ballots cast and 285 absentee ballots mailed out in a county with 54,000 registered voters. Supervisor of Elections and Voter Registration Gail Schrader did not have partisan figures at her fingertips, but more voters are picking Democratic ballots than Republican, she said. (UPDATE: 2,027 Democratic ballots and 1,130 Republican, which is about the usual ration.) Overall, Schrader expects a mere 21–22 percent turnout.

    • Tim Denson went on Tim Bryant this morning and hit back at Mayor Nancy Denson for saying that Tim will "more than double" your property taxes. "I'm shocked that she would say that, being a former tax commissioner, because she has to see that there's no way that would happen, ever," he said. "That's an extreme exaggeration, a bit of fear mongering here." Nancy will be on 1340 WGAU tomorrow at 9 a.m.

10th District congressional candidate and Henry Rollins lookalike Jody Hice has positioned himself as Rep. Paul Broun's successor, calling himself a "constitutionalist," adopting Broun's four-way test and frequently waving around a small copy of the Constitution at campaign stops.

One of Hice's six Republican opponents, Stephen Simpson, called him on it during an Atlanta Press Club debate on Sunday.
