The fifth annual Art Crawl hosted by the Athens Area Arts Council—slated for this Saturday, Dec. 12 from 1–5 p.m.—will feature the work of more than 30 local artists displayed throughout the Chase St. Park Warehouse. Nineteen businesses in the complex will present special one-day-only group and solo art shows of paintings, sculpture, photography and more. Several artists working in painting, mixed media and metalwork will open their studios to the public for a behind-the-scenes look into their creative space.

Canopy Fundraiser Gala Features Installation and Aerial Artists Saturday

Kevin Bates' home, located next door to Georgia Power, was presented with a 2015 Historic Preservation Award from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

This Saturday, Canopy Studio will hold its annual fundraiser gala at the historic Normaltown home of Kevin Bates. Admission includes food provided by chef Peter Dale of The National and local craft beer from the Southern Brewing Company. There will be trapeze performances by company members in the backyard, a DJ providing tunes for an inevitable dance party, and plenty of surprises throughout the night.

Upcoming Exhibitions at Lamar Dodd

The exhibitions at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art this semester pull together an impressive lineup of artists from around the country working in a variety of mediums. The shows address issues that range from abstract concepts of time, perspective and form to contemporary social issues of gender, identity and the effects of mass media.

Two rounds of receptions will be held in September and October, providing an opportunity for artists and viewers to mingle over light refreshments. To supplement the exhibitions, gallery talks and tours will be lead by artists and curators.

Lyndon House Hosts Native American Art Symposium This Weekend

The Lyndon House Arts Center will host several artists and academic professionals in a symposium on contemporary Southeastern Native American art to compliment the center’s newest exhibition, “Return from Exile,” this Saturday, Aug. 29. “Return from Exile” will remain on view through Friday, Oct. 16, after which it will begin a two-year tour across the U.S. to universities, museums and tribal heritage sites. The symposium will be the only opportunity during the exhibition’s stint at the Lyndon House to meet and hear from the featured artists. Both the symposium and general exhibition will be free and open to the public.

Visiting Artist Lectures at Lamar Dodd School of Art

Every academic semester, UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art (LDSOA) hosts several series of public lectures by artists, scholars, critics and museum professionals from around the world. The visitors typically give hour-long lectures on topics related to their professional or creative career. These lectures are opportunities for students and locals alike to meet with and ask questions of the speaker.

AthFest Educates Now Accepting Grant Applications

AthFest Educates is currently accepting applications for its next wave of music and arts grants. The nonprofit, which awards grants biannually in August and January, raises funds primarily through the AthFest Music and Arts Festival in June and the AthHalf Half Marathon in October.
