Classic City Rollergirls vs. Bowling Green Recap

With heavy hearts, the Classic City Rollergirls took to the track Saturday night, hoping to find solace after a difficult week that saw the untimely passing of CCRG superfan Lord Verne Alfred Mosley, husband of team captain Katillac Coupe Devill. After a touching tribute that included a moment of silence, the nearly sold-out Classic Center roared with approval as skaters lined-up for the first jam of the evening.

Early in the bout it appeared as though Vette City, the visiting team from Bowling Green, KY, was in over its head, as CCRG rode an emotional wave to an 18-0 lead. After a hard-fought four points from Phat Amy put the home team up 22-3, a series of unfortunate events, ill-timed penalties and mental errors began taking their toll.

Vette City took advantage of the time CCRG’s Human Missile Crisis and Elizabeth Impaler spent together in the penalty box, and evened the score at 22-22. With less than 18 minutes remaining in the first half, Vette City sent Jenferno to the jam line, who delivered 14 points. With the score 36-27, the visiting team had its first lead of the bout, and they never looked back. The first half concluded with Vette City’s Brickhouse Barby hosting a jamming clinic, racking up a ridiculous number of points and leading the visitors to a comfortable 89-49 halftime advantage.

Despite Human Missile Crisis’ big seven-point jam to open the second half, the hometown team couldn’t sustain the momentum, or make the necessary adjustments, to compete with Vette City. As fatigue set in, CCRG’s thinned ranks desperately missed Coupe Devill's veteran leadership and Lolli MaeHamm’s standout blocking (the latter was out with a broken leg).

After a hard-earned three points from Super Smash Fro, inserted as a jammer in an effort to swing momentum, the team trailed 65-128. Then, jammer penalties in back-to-back jams put Classic City in an impossible position. Trailing 65-160, thoughts began drifting towards the afterparty at DePalma’s. Everyone loves pizza. Vette City won 224-88.

Up next, Classic City travels to Charlotte, NC to square off against the B-Dazzlers on Saturday, Aug. 9. The next home bout is Aug. 23 at the Classic Center vs. the Greenville Derby Dames.
