  • In the Loop: You Can Drink at UGA Football Games This Fall—if You're Rich

The SEC has lifted its ban on selling alcoholic beverages at sporting events, but the average Dawg still won't be able to throw back a cold one in the stands at Sanford Stadium.

The new policy, approved Friday, requires conference members that wish to sell alcohol to set aside designated areas for consumption and prohibits drinking in seating areas.

"Our policy governing alcohol sales has been a source of considerable discussion and respectful debate among our member universities in recent years," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. "As a conference, we have been observant of trends in the sale and consumption of alcohol at collegiate sporting events and have drawn upon the experiences and insights of our member schools which have responsibly established limited alcohol sales within controlled spaces and premium seating areas."

    Uga X.

This is about as likely to happen as Kirby Smart leaving to coach Georgia Tech, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking the University of Georgia to stop using a real-life English bulldog as its mascot.

After Uga X's encounter with Bevo, the Texas longhorn, at Tuesday's Sugar Bowl, PETA sent letters to both schools asking them to stop using live animals as mascots.

"It's indefensible to subject animals to the stress of being packed up, carted from state to state, and paraded in front of a stadium full of screaming fans," PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement. "It's no surprise that a skittish steer would react to a perceived threat by charging, and PETA is calling on the University of Texas and the University of Georgia to learn from this dangerous incident, retire their live-animal mascots, and stick to the talented costumed mascots who can lead cheers, react to the crowd, and pump up the team."

  • In the Loop: UGA Student Accused of Using Racial Slur at Football Game

A white University of Georgia student is under investigation after being accused of shouting a racial slur at Saturday's Georgia–Tennessee game.

Student Klarissa Gulebian posted in the "Overheard at UGA" Facebook forum that someone yelled "put that [n-word] in the game," apparently referring to quarterback Justin Fields, a highly rated freshman who is black and whom some fans prefer over starter Jake Fromm.

The person was later identified as baseball player Adam Sasser. He is under investigation by the UGA Equal Opportunity Office for violating the university's non-discrimination and non-harassment policy, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

  • In the Loop: Dems Troll Brian Kemp With Pro-Vols Banner

Is Brian Kemp really a Tennessee fan? Well, the Brian Kemp isn't, but a Brian Kemp is.

As Kemp and other Republican candidates were wrapping up a tailgate at Herty Field—where, we presume, everyone wore red—Georgia Democrats hired a plane to buzz Sanford Stadium with a banner reading "BRIANKEMP SAYS... GO VOLS."

Brian Kemp is running for governor. BrianKemp is a parody Twitter account filled with negative news stories about Kemp and Photoshopped images of the candidate wearing orange. (The actual Kemp's actual Twitter handle is @BrianKempGA.)

If you're the type of person who suffers pigskin withdrawal after the Super Bowl, a cure is coming: The Peach State Cats, an arena football team, will play their home games in Athens next spring.

The Cats' home base will be Akins Ford Arena, aka the Classic Center's grand hall, which when equipped with temporary bleachers can seat 2,000 people. The arena also hosts the University of Georgia Ice Dawgs club hockey team and, until recently, the Classic City Rollergirls, who now play at Athens Arena on Atlanta Highway.

“We are looking forward to calling the Classic Center our home,” Cats owner Tim Freeman said in a news release. “Athens has had a rich football history with the success of the University of Georgia, Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central programs over the years. We are looking forward to serving the community.”
