The Athens Spring Fling, scheduled to take place Saturday at Southeast Clarke Park, has been canceled by organizers due to the threat of bad weather, according to a post on the event's Facebook page.

In "Run It Up," Flagpole's new podcast, we take a deeper look at some of the stories from the current issue. In this week's episode, Gabe Vodicka welcomes AC Carter, the local artist behind Ad·verse Fest, a music, drag and performance event happening Mar. 1–2 in downtown Athens. As Lambda Celsius, Carter explores sex and gender fluidity through a dance-tastic electropop lens. Their festival highlights similarly minded solo acts and duos from around the country.

The East Clayton Street bar 9d's will be closed today and Saturday while its alcohol license is suspended after agreeing to a consent order with the Athens-Clarke County attorney's office on an April 2017 discrimination complaint.
Kendrick Bullock alleged that 9d's denied him entry for a dress-code violation in April 2017 in spite of the bar not having a dress code publicly posted as required by a local anti-discrimination ordinance passed in 2016 in response to numerous complaints that student bars downtown were unfairly using dress codes to keep out black customers.
In addition to closing for two days, 9d's agreed to go on probation for 12 months, pay a $350 fine and:
This weekend, the Wild Rumpus Parade and Spectacle returns to downtown Athens for a 10th annual edition, inviting Athenians of all stripes and all ages to dress up, howl at the moon and celebrate Halloween for a good cause. (See The Calendar for a full schedule of events.)
After watching director Panos Cosmatos' Mandy, my friend Kris Deason described it as "a baking-soda-infused, water-soluble, completely smokable concentration of Heavy Metalmagazine… like a nightmare where the worst monster you can imagine comes for you and you stomp its dick."
That's really the only review you need, but here are a few more words of praise.

After 18 years, Atlanta's Rock*A*Teens returned this summer with Sixth House. While the group’s sixth album doesn’t throw any surprise punches, songs such as “Billy Really,” “Lady Macbeth” and “Crystal Skies” rise above the signature haze of reverb and distortion layered over singer and guitarist Chris Lopez’s haunting tales of heartache in the Deep South.
Flagpole caught up with the band's Chris Lopez and T. Ballard Lesemann in advance of their show at the 40 Watt Club this Saturday. This interview has been edited for length.
After putting in work for nearly a decade with Athens rockers Modern Skirts, Phillip Brantley debuted his new trio, Palace Doctor, with last year's Mangled LP. In contrast to the Skirts' sunny indie-pop, Palace Doctor—consisting of Brantley on guitar and vocals, plus Nick Robbins (Velveteen Pink) on bass and Jeremy Wheatley (Crooked Fingers) on drums—deals in a moody, muted brand of rock that incorporates strains of grunge, doo-wop and Americana.

Unlike most kids, who tend to be interested in something for about five minutes after you've paid for it, Beau Shell (aka the Lil' Ice Cream Dude) has spent the past five-and-a-half years building his small business.
He started off with a little cart, out of which he sold popsicles and frozen novelties at events around town, eventually becoming the youngest member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce. More recently, he upgraded to a heavy-duty food-truck-style trailer after a successful crowd-funding campaign. He works nearly every weekend in the hot months and fairly frequently even in the cold ones. He's also only 13 years old.
On Small Business Saturday, he'll open Cool World, a proper brick-and-mortar store, in the Shops of Ansonborough, on Gaines School Road on the Eastside.
