The Mandrake: Who runs the world? Girls! Specifically, girls dressed as boys who are treating girls like sex objects. And those girls are literally puppets. This mad, mad world is University Theatre’s innovative take on Machiavelli’s misogynistic comedy where the end justifies the means as long as you get what you want—assuming you are a man. Or a woman playing a man in this case.

Formed over four decades ago in Paw Paw, West Virginia, Asleep at the Wheel has been introducing Western swing to audiences around the world through a relentless touring schedule. Most recently, the band released Still the King, a tribute record to Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, which features contributions from many country music legends and newcomers in the genre. And yesterday, that album took home the Grammy award for Best Recording Package.

Flagpole connected with the band’s leader and founder, Ray Benson, over email to answer a few questions about the band’s history and their stop in Athens at The Foundry this Friday, Feb. 19.

President Snow prepared for the winter weather by stocking up on adult beverages.

Haha, suckers, I already made my bread/milk/whiskey run before posting this, but it might snow on Friday or Saturday.

Clarke and Oconee counties (and points north) are included in a winter weather advisoryissued by the National Weather Service today. The advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday.

Culture Briefs: Check out Saturday's Art Crawl Map and Schedule

The fifth annual Art Crawl hosted by the Athens Area Arts Council—slated for this Saturday, Dec. 12 from 1–5 p.m.—will feature the work of more than 30 local artists displayed throughout the Chase St. Park Warehouse. Nineteen businesses in the complex will present special one-day-only group and solo art shows of paintings, sculpture, photography and more. Several artists working in painting, mixed media and metalwork will open their studios to the public for a behind-the-scenes look into their creative space.

Culture Briefs: Athens Artist Noah Saunders to Have Retrospective in South Carolina

Noah Saunders finished packing up a U-Haul yesterday to brave the roads to South Carolina. In spite of the recent flooding in Columbia, his upcoming opening at the HoFP Gallery is still scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9. “Noah Saunders’ SCOPE, Looking Forward, Looking Back” will be a 25-year retrospective of the artist’s signature three-dimensional portraits in wire.

The show will include 15 new works and several older pieces, including some on loan from the artist’s first show at the same space which took place 20 years ago when Saunders was only 16.
