Win or lose, Athens-Clarke County police want you to know there will be no riots in the streets of Athens tonight after Georgia plays in the college football national championship game.

The department called a news conference earlier this afternoon to discuss plans for public safety downtown. The game is in Atlanta, but local police expect a crowd along the lines of a typical UGA home game—potentially tens of thousands of people, according to Sgt. Epifiano Rodriguez.

The campus carry bill Gov. Nathan Deal signed last month explicitly bans guns at Sanford Stadium while allowing them on many other parts of the UGA campus. But officials are still grappling with at least one gray area—what the poorly worded law means for tailgaters.

    The Macon Telegraph reports:

One scenario has raised an interesting question for Georgia: Given the fact that up to 100,000 fans, if not more, partake in tailgating festivities many hours before kickoff, how will the law be interpreted on its campus for a Saturday football game?

  • In the Loop: Turnout Light for Watkinsville Alcohol Referendum

Only 63 of Watkinsville’s 2,117 eligible voters participated in the three weeks of early voting leading up to todays ’s election on whether Sunday sales of alcohol should be allowed at the city’s restaurants and convenience stores.

The turnout of less than 3 percent of the city’s voters suggests that only a small number of the city’s voters will decide the issue.

In the Mar. 17, 2015 special election in the city on liquor by the drink, only 265 voters cast a ballot, representing just a little more than 15 percent of the 1,759 registered voters. Positive votes were cast by 216 of those voters.

Voting on Sunday sales will take place from 7 a.m.–7 p.m. today at the city’s two precincts, City Hall and Annex.

Like all of us, Athens resident Michael DiNardo was pretty psyched about Jacob Eason's touchdown pass to Isaiah McKenzie that beat Missouri Saturday night.

Some might say he took it a bit too far.

DiNardo's roommate, Jeff Moore, posted a video to Twitter of DiNardo celebrating the epic play—a celebration that included putting his head through a pane of glass. The video went viral as an example of just how boneheaded Georgia fans can be.

UGA students who head for the beach this weekend may be at risk of being sexually assaulted—but no one keeps numbers on how often such assaults occur, and university officials are reluctant to discuss it.

"For a sexual predator, [spring break] would be the perfect place to find people who have lower inhibitions… A perfect storm,” said Sally Sheppard, director of The Cottage, a sexual assault and childrens advocacy center in Athens.
