Donald E. Wilkes Jr. died suddenly yesterday of an apparent heart attack while on vacation with his family. He was retired from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he taught for 40 years. "Eugene," as he was called by friends, contributed over 115 articles to Flagpole. He was an ardent defender of civil liberties and spent his life defending the downtrodden.

In the Loop: Memorial Service Scheduled Friday for UGA Professor Marianne Shockley

A memorial service for University of Georgia professor Marianne Shockley will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Apalachee United Methodist Church in Madison, according to her obituary.

Shockley, 42, was an award-winning professor in the UGA College of Agriculture. Her specialty was entomophagy, or eating insects. Flagpole wrote about her work in 2015 and again last year.

Former students remembered her as a passionate teacher and generous mentor.

In the Loop: Athens Police Identify Body Found in River

Athens-Clarke County police have identified the body found in the Middle Oconee River last Saturday as belonging to Emory Odell Findley, a 54-year-old Athens resident.

Police said that Findley had been reported missing on Mar. 29.

Kayakers spotted the body near St. George Drive, off Timothy Road, around 1 p.m. Apr. 13. Police removed it from the river, and it was taken to the state crime lab in Atlanta for autopsy.

Police do not suspect foul play, but are still investigating the circumstances of Findley's death. They urged anyone with information to contact Det. Paul Johnson at 706-613-3330, ext. 522, or paul.johnson@accgov.com.

In the Loop: Vigil Held at UGA for Victims of Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting

University of Georgia students and other Athens members gathered outside UGA’s Tate Student Center Tuesday afternoon to mourn the victims of the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Eleven were left dead and six injured after the mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue on Saturday. The shooting is believed to be the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the US, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

In the Loop: Woman Killed Crossing West Broad Street

An elderly woman was killed Friday night while crossing West Broad Street, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Patricia Barker, 74, was crossing West Broad at Briarcliff Road, where she lived, when she was hit by a driver in a minivan traveling east at about 8:30 p.m. Friday. She was crossing north to south and had made it across all but one of seven lanes of traffic when she was hit, police said.

When police arrived, National EMS personnel were performing CPR. Barker was then taken to a hospital, where she died of her injuries.

There is no crosswalk at Briarcliff Road, and there are no sidewalks to the nearest crosswalks on that part of West Broad.

No charges have been filed against the driver, a 36-year-old Oconee County woman.

The University of Georgia has scheduled a memorial service for Karen Tinsley, the UGA faculty member who was hit and killed by a truck while riding her bike Tuesday near Bishop.

The service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Apr. 9 in the Chapel on North Campus. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. in the Georgia Center's Mahler Hall.

Lord & Stephens West funeral home in Watkinsville has not announced funeral arrangements.

In the Loop: Driver Kills UGA Professor and Cyclist Karen Tinsley

Karen Tinsley, a faculty member in the University of Georgia's College of Family and Consumer Sciences, died Tuesday after being hit by a truck while riding her bike in Oconee County.

An F-150 struck and killed Tinsley, an avid cyclist, on Astondale Road near Bishop Tuesday night, according to the Oconee Enterprise.

Tinsley, 45, is a native of Augusta who moved to Athens in 2002 and earned her master's degree and doctorate from UGA. The Watkinsville resident was recently promoted to senior public service associate at FACS.
