Last week brought the terribly sad news that 23-year-old UGA student Philip Carpenter had been found dead in his downtown apartment. Carpenter, whom friends knew as Phil, was active in the Athens music community, as a singer-songwriter and member of the bands Colibri and Second Sons.
Residents of Farmer’s Exchange Lofts on East Broad Street found their 23-year-old roommate unresponsive this morning, said Hilda Sorrow, the public information officer for Athens-Clarke County police.
A 28-year-old woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck early Saturday morning while crossing Highway 441.
A University of Georgia student was shot and killed Tuesday, Jan. 13 during a drug deal gone wrong, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
Min Seok Cho, 21, was "transported by private vehicle" to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was declared dead, according to police.
"Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim met the person or persons responsible for the shooting to exchange marijuana," police said in a news release.

Dan Magill, the longtime UGA tennis coach, died overnight at the age of 93 after several years of declining health.
Magill was the first baby ever born at Athens Regional Medical Center, was a bat boy for the UGA baseball team in grade school and managed the tennis courts as a teenager. By the 1950s, he was simultaneously sports information director, head of the Bulldog Club and men's tennis coach, a post he intended to hold for just a year but stuck with for 34.

Last Friday, we reported that longtime local musician and scene fixture Brian Crane had died. Now, Crane's brother Bill, a Georgia-based political strategist, WSB radio broadcaster and syndicated columnist, writes with the news that the family has arranged an Irish wake-style memorial, per Brian's wishes, to be held at East/West Bistro on Sunday, Apr. 27 from 4–7 p.m.

From Paul Reavis of The Dictatortots comes the very sad news that local musician Brian Crane has passed away. Crane, who played in The Sugar Daddies and North Hollywood Model Search, was also known for his offstage work, as tour manager for groups like Flat Duo Jets and The Cramps.
