Pedestrian Killed on Commerce Road
A 28-year-old woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck early Saturday morning while crossing Highway 441.
Santricia Monicia Barrow of Sartain Drive was hit while crossing Commerce Road at the Newton Bridge Road intersection at about 2:20 a.m. and ran into the path of the truck. The driver tried to avoid her but couldn't, according to Athens-Clarke County police. He has not been charged with a crime.
There are crosswalks at the intersection but no sidewalks, and there are clearly worn paths along the side of the road. The speed limit increases from 55 miles per hour to 65 where 441 becomes a four-lane divided highway at the Jackson County line.
