Grub Notes: Athens Bars Can Now Sell Beer and Wine to Go

Athens bars and restaurants can now sell unopened bottles and cans of beer and wine to go during the coronavirus emergency after Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams signed an order Friday suspending certain provisions of the local alcoholic beverage ordinance.
The ACC Commission essentially shut down bars and restaurant dining rooms when it limited public gatherings to less than 10 people on Mar. 16, then officially closed them to the publicon Mar. 19, although restaurants can still do take-out and delivery.
Ordinarily, businesses with a license to serve alcohol on the premises can't sell it for consumption off premises, and vice versa.

The SEC has lifted its ban on selling alcoholic beverages at sporting events, but the average Dawg still won't be able to throw back a cold one in the stands at Sanford Stadium.
The new policy, approved Friday, requires conference members that wish to sell alcohol to set aside designated areas for consumption and prohibits drinking in seating areas.
"Our policy governing alcohol sales has been a source of considerable discussion and respectful debate among our member universities in recent years," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. "As a conference, we have been observant of trends in the sale and consumption of alcohol at collegiate sporting events and have drawn upon the experiences and insights of our member schools which have responsibly established limited alcohol sales within controlled spaces and premium seating areas."

Grub Notes: Happy Birthday to Terrapin and Creature Comforts!
In addition to the Classic City Brew Fest this Sunday, two local breweries are celebrating their birthdays in April.
Terrapin celebrates its 17th anniversary with a carnival from 4:30–8:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 6 at the Newton Bridge Road brewery. In addition to year-round brews, the carnival features cask ales, barrel-aged beers, beers from Terrapin’s ATL Brew Lab at SunTrust Park and other special brews, along with entertainment from the Balkun Brothers band, local vendors, food trucks and games. Tickets, available at terrapinbeer.com, are $26 and include beer samples, a brewery tour and a souvenir glass. Proceeds will benefit Nuçi’s Space, a mental health and resource center for musicians.

Grub Notes: Creature Comforts Expands and More Beer News

Creature Comforts has expanded the wood cellar at its downtown Athens brewery, and a new barrel-aged offering will go on sale next week.
Pearson—a fruited ale aged in oak barrels that showcases Elberta peaches from Fort Valley's Pearson Farms—will be available on draft and in half-liter bottles to go Saturday, Mar. 30 from noon to 10 p.m. in the tasting room. Bottles are $18, and there is a limit of six per customer.
Next up are Curious #12 and Existence, available later this spring. Curious #12 (8.1% ABV) is made from a portion of a previous release, River Ridge Black, conditioned with organic black raspberries and black courants, that was aged in a port barrel for eight months. Existence (13.7% ABV) is an imperial stout aged in a bourbon barrel for 23 months.

Grub Notes: Creature Comforts Releases New Beers, and Terrapin Breaks Ground on Warehouse

Koki Buni's label was designed by Athens artist David Hale.
Koko Buni is back, and new version of Creature Comforts' Tritonia gose will hit the streets next week.
Koko Buni, Creature Comforts' winter seasonal, is a milk porter brewed with Ethiopean coffee beans from 1000 Faces, coconut and cocoa nibs from Athens' Condor Chocolates and Illinois-based Ethereal Confections. The coffee beans themselves are also available as 1000 Faces' Koko Buni Blend. It's available on draft and in cans in Athens and Atlanta.
Creature Comforts will also release a version of Tritonia—based on the Berliner weisse Athena—with lemon and pineapple on Friday, Dec. 21. A previous version featured cucumber and lime.

Grub Notes: 'Brunch Bill' Takes Effect in Athens This Sunday

This Sunday, Athens restaurants can start pouring mimosas and bloody marys for early risers—and by early, I mean 10-ish.
At a called voting meeting prior to their agenda-setting meeting Tuesday night, the Athens-Clarke County Commission unanimously approved an ordinance pushing up the time when restaurants can start serving alcohol on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11 a.m.

In the Loop: Republicans Retake Athens House Seats; Abrams Vows to Fight On

12:26 p.m.: Republicans have retaken two GOP-leaning state House seats that Democrats won in a 2017 special election.
A final batch of 3,037 mail-in absentee ballots that Athens-Clarke County election officials uploaded at about noon were not enough to save state Reps. Deborah Gonzalez (D-Athens) and Jonathan Wallace (D-Watkinsville). The absentees netted Wallace 302 votes and Gonzalez 227.
In the final tally, Marcus Wiedower defeated Wallace 53 percent to 47 percent, and Houston Gaines beat Gonzalez 54–46.

Grub Notes: Terrapin Releases So Fresh and So Green, Green and More Local Beer News
Terrapin will release its aways eagerly awaited wet-hopped So Fresh and So Green, Green IPA at its annual Hop Harvest Festival this Saturday.
This year, the Athens-based brewery went with a hop called Glacier, which balances SFASGG's malt sweetness and brings citrus notes and an herbal, woody aroma to the beer. And, for the first time, the hops are sourced from Michigan—a market Terrapin recently expanded into, and which has a, um, budding hop-growing industry. (American hops typically flourish in the Pacific Northwest.)
This will be a busy weekend for beer lovers. Also Saturday, Akademia Brewpub celebrates its first anniversary with the release of Paraskevidekatriaphobia, a 13% ABV stout referencing the fear of Friday the 13th, the day Akademia opened last year.

Grub Notes: Creature Comforts Releases Three New Beers

Athens brewery Creature Comforts released its long-awaited lawnmower beer, Classic City Lager, on Monday.
The 4.2% ABV pale lager is meant to be an introduction to craft beer, as well as a simple, cold beverage to keep stocked in the fridge, according to head brewer David Stein.
It's been available on draft for a while now, but at its most recent Service Industry Night, Creature Comforts rolled out six- and 12-packs of cans. They'll show up in stores in Athens soon, if they haven't already.
