Everyone knows Carole King’s music, even if they don’t know they know Carole King’s music. The critically acclaimed songwriter wrote (with her then-husband Gerry Goffin) her first No. 1 hit at age 17—“Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” famously sung by The Shirelles. Her repertoire from the 1960s and '70s is full of hits like “Some Kind of Wonderful” by The Drifters, "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin, “Chains” by The Beatles and more. It wasn’t until 1971 that King released a full album, Tapestry, of songs written and performed by herself.

The 2019 Flagpole Athens Music Awards show kicked off AthFest at the Morton Theatre on Thursday, where local musicians took home awards in 20 categories based on a reader vote. The night's big winner was folk-rock group Family and Friends, which took home both the Album and Artist of the Year awards.

In the Loop: Athens Moms (and Others) Rally to End Gun Violence

About 30 people wearing orange to symbolize their opposition to gun violence braved a looming thunderstorm Friday night for a rally featuring Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz and Police Chief Cleveland Spruill.

"We wear orange to say we will be seen, we will be heard, we will show up—even when it's raining—and we will work to end gun violence," said Emma Jones of Moms Demand Action, which organized the rally.

The group also tried to light up City Hall orange, though as they acknowledged, the coloring wasn't really visible in the dim light.

Culture Briefs: Lauren Haynes of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Visits Athens

Lauren Haynes, Curator of Contemporary American Art at Crystal Bridges Museum, is the guest juror for this year's Juried Exhibition at the Lyndon House.

Lauren Haynes is working towards the day when it is the norm for female artists and artists of color to inhabit museum collections with the ease and frequency of white males. She also wants to get people excited about contemporary art.

Haynes spoke to a full auditorium last night at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. The Curator of Contemporary American Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, she is in Athens to serve as this year’s guest juror for the Lyndon House Art Center’s 44th Juried Exhibition. Speculation is high among local artists about how the show might look and feel in the hands of this bold young curator. Babs Kall, a local artist who works with fused glass, said “I’m curious and anxious to see what Lauren chose for the show. I am expecting a vibrant and colorful, tactile exhibit.”

Folks trickled in on a very cold Wednesday evening for Post Animal's openers, Shane T and Illiterate Light. Nashville-based Shane T, accompanied by bassist Taylor Cotton and drummer Matt Martin, gave a cohesive performance, with a fuller setlist than one might expect from an artist who has only released one single since going solo. A graduate of the Music Business Program at UGA and former frontman of Athens band Son & Thief, Shane gave a shoutout to the Georgia Theatre, where he interned before graduating.
